One Community believes a sustainable future is possible if enough people if enough people want it. For that to happen we feel a working model with widespread appeal must be created. It should be affordable, applicable across a diversity of cultures, globally accessible, created so that people with average knowledge and little or no experience can duplicate it, and it must have a marketing engine capable of exposing enough people to build the necessary momentum for it to continue on its own. This is what One Community is open source project-launch blueprinting and here is our weekly progress update (#16) covering our accomplishments for the week of June 10th, 2013.

Here are the details of our progress for the last week and everything discussed in the above video…

A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE: FOOD

The aquapini designs are now moving forward again in 3D thanks to the help of one of our newest partners, Ziggy Tolnay (Database Systems Designer and Founder of The RBE10K Project)! Once we’ve got everything we are capable of creating into 3D we will then be shifting these back first to our partner Avery Ellis (Aquaponics Specialist and owner/operator of Integrated Aquaponics) to double check the plumbing and filtration and then to our partner Charles McLean (Architecture & Urban Agriculture Designer, Professor, and owner of OM Greengroup) to put it into Revit so we can run real-to-life simulations. Here’s the first series of 3D export photos:

ADDITIONAL AQUAPINI PROGRESS

In addition to the 3D progress on the large-scale production aquapini, we’ve also completed the research, formatting and refinement of the first 7 trees of the Large-scale Food Production Aquapini Planting and Harvesting Details. Here’s an example of just one of them:

#6A :: Casimiroa (White Sapote)

The casimiroa or white sapote is a tree in the citrus family native to Mexico. The tree is normally 15-30 feet tall, but can be kept smaller by pruning. They are highly productive, with some varieties capable of bearing fruit nearly year-round. Trees prefer full sun and infrequent but deep watering. Since it is in the citrus family, the blossoms are attractive to bees; the flowers produce pollen but little nectar.

The apple-sized fruit have the sweetness of a pear and the texture of an avocado. The paper thin skin can be eaten, but sometimes has a bitter resinous taste. The skin tends to “slip” when ripe, and can be easily removed. There are 1 to 5 seeds near the center of the fruit. Freezing the peeled, seeded fruit to make a dairy-free “ice cream” is a good way to deal with the abundant crops.

PLACEMENTS

The Casimiroa tree will be placed against the north wall of the Aquapini to avoid casting shade on other parts of the house. We will receive this plant as a small grafted tree.

CULTURAL CONSIDERATIONS

• Casimiroas are a host to larvae of the swallowtail butterfly
• Like citrus trees, they can be subject to aphids and scale
• Casimiroas will take considerable drought once established
• Trees can stand a few degrees of frost but will lose their leaves
• Grafts callus quickly, but may delay budding out for several weeks
• Trees can be stressed into flowering by withholding water 2-3 weeks
• A related shrubby species, C. pringlei, might make a dwarfing rootstock

TROPICAL ATRIUM 3D PROGRESS

The Tropical Atrium will create and demonstrate an aesthetically pleasing and functional multi-purpose facility that will serve as a tropical fruit production facility combined with multi-purpose recreational use that will easily invite members of the community/village/city to want to spend time in this space. Here are this week’s 3D exports compliments of friend of the project Devin Porter:

ADDITIONAL TROPICAL ATRIUM PROGRESS

In addition to the 3D Tropical Atrium work, this last week we also completed the cost analysis details for everything that will be planted in this structure and the details of our pollinator attraction strategy:

A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE: HOUSING – EARTHBAG VILLAGE PROGRESS

The earthbag village 3D continues to progress thanks to the help of John Bassist. Here is the open facebook group specifically for 3D work and collaboration on One Community’s models and others. You can see our on-going work there. Related to the 3D progress, here is a mockup of the entire village:

We’ve also now gotten the first 9 domes specifically in place and with the correct number of windows facing in the correct direction. Here is an image of the 2D drawing (above) and the 3D creation based upon it:

The next step is adding in the surrounding earth so people can see the surrounding slope.

SUSTAINABLE FUTURE HIGHEST GOOD BUSINESS PORTALS

Open source and free-shared sustainable development policies are another area that One Community is open source project-launch blueprinting in support of a Highest Good of All sustainable future for all. For those interested in joining us in our goal to build and evolve open source and free-sharing self-sufficient teacher/demonstration communities, villages, and cities all over the world, we just completed the following 3 portals outlining the three business models we are developing and open source sharing:

• Highest Good non-profit business development
• Highest Good for-profit business development
• Highest Good entrepreneurial model and business sponsorship

TWO OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS

We’ve completed the infrastructure and first phase tutorial for our global collaboration database of others building similar structures and their experiences, adaptations, etc. This page will evolve to include:

• Detailed instructions on how to contribute to the global collaborative
• Ongoing and ever-evolving list of projects using our blueprints and collaborating with One Community
• Additional resources, adaptations, and other useful content provided by global collaborative partners

We’re also super excited to be able to announce our most recent partnership with Build Hybrid Communities and Towns Now! Build Hybrid Communities and Towns Now is a group working on bridging to a RBE (Resource Based Economy) from the current system. Sharing resource based economy values, a similar strategy for global transformation, and the belief that a completely sustainable planet that benefits all people is possible, One Community and Build Hybrid Communities and Towns Now communicate and share information and resources weekly (and sometimes daily) in our progress toward this goal.
